Coalition parties are moving to ease the AOW pension plan amid opposition pressure

Coalition parties in the Netherlands have agreed to soften planned changes to the AOW state pension after strong opposition in parliament. A motion to revise the proposal gained majority support in the Tweede Kamer (Lower House of Parliament).

Under the coalition agreement of D66, VVD and CDA, the AOW retirement age would rise faster from 2033. Each extra year of life expectancy would delay retirement by a full year instead of eight months. This plan met heavy resistance from opposition parties GroenLinks-PvdA and PVV, which demanded it be scrapped entirely.

SGP leader كريس ستوفر announced that the proposal is being sent “back to the drawing board.” He said a new version must remain financially viable but fairer to workers. He added that the link between life expectancy and retirement age will likely be weaker and could include special arrangements for people in physically demanding jobs.

D66 parliamentary leader يان باترنوتّه said easing the proposal is “worth considering,” especially for heavy labor professions. Prime Minister روب يِتّن reacted cautiously, saying he wants to see how the debate develops but welcomed the fact that the Tweede Kamer is offering concrete ideas to form a majority.

The trade union FNV strongly opposes the revised plans. It argues that the measures still violate the 2019 pension agreement between unions, employers, and the government. FNV said the proposal is socially unfair and shows little respect for the Dutch polder model, warning it will not return to negotiations unless the plan is fully withdrawn.
