Thousands march in Argentina in defense of public universities
Thousands of people recently demonstrated in the streets of Argentina in the fourth national university march. The main objective of the protest was to demand more funds from the Government to finance public education and improve the salaries of teachers and workers.
This mobilization is the fourth to be organized during the current year. The conflict between national universities and the Government began due to cuts in the education budget. According to the organizers, the lack of economic resources endangers the normal functioning of institutions and the quality of higher education.
Students, professors, unions, and citizens who defend the free education system participated in the march. Although the largest concentration of people occurred in the city of Buenos Aires, in front of the National Congress, significant demonstrations were also recorded in the main cities of the provinces.
For its part, the Government maintains that it is necessary to control public spending to stabilize the country's economy. However, university authorities state that the budget increases offered so far are not enough to compensate for inflation and the operating expenses of the faculties.
The day of protest ended peacefully, but the conflict remains unresolved. In the coming days, talks are expected to continue between university representatives and the Ministry of Human Capital to try to reach an agreement that guarantees the future of the national educational system.
