Armenia's Diplomatic Developments and Important Diaspora Events
The United States has stated that Russia has "turned its back" on Armenia, and Washington is now working to reduce Yerevan's dependence on Moscow. Parallel to this statement, Russian border guards have officially completed their work at Yerevan's "Zvartnots" International Airport. This change took place at the request of the Armenian government, which was submitted months ago.
On the international stage, European Commission President Charles Michel calls on Armenia and Azerbaijan to finally sign the peace treaty. He urged the leaders of the two countries to "stop the games" and finalize the negotiations. Michel noted that a final agreement is necessary to establish stability in the region.
Another important diplomatic meeting took place between the special representatives of Armenia and Turkey. The parties discussed the process of normalizing relations and the possibilities of restarting the railway connection. This is seen as a positive step toward improving economic and political ties between the two neighboring countries.
The Artsakh issue also remains on the agenda. The Human Rights Union of Nagorno-Karabakh has sent letters to the Pope and UNESCO, asking to protect Armenian cultural heritage and support the return of forcibly displaced persons. At the same time, the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) has strongly criticized the Biden administration, stating that US policy failed to prevent the 2023 events in Artsakh.
There is also important news in cultural life. The Armenian American Museum of California presents the world premiere of the "Hope Rising" project, dedicated to Armenian dance and music. Also mentioned is the famous 1996 quote by 13-year-old Maral Melkonian: "I stood up, I am ready to fight for Armenia," which continues to inspire a new generation of activists.
Finally, we report on community losses and memorial services. Hasmik Kolanjian has passed away at the age of 73. Also, the 40th-day memorial service for Valentin Sarafian will take place on August 4 at the Holy Martyrs Armenian Church.
