Armenia's Foreign Policy and Important Community Events
Today's top news concerns the relations between Armenia and Russia. The United States has stated that Russia has "turned its back" on Armenia, which is why Washington is trying to reduce Yerevan's dependence on Moscow. At the same time, Russian border guards have officially completed their service at Yerevan's "Zvartnots" International Airport. This process took place at the request of the Armenian side, which was submitted earlier this year.
European Commission President Charles Michel is calling on Armenia and Azerbaijan to stop "playing games" and finally sign the peace treaty. In the final days of his term, Michel held separate meetings with the leaders of both countries, encouraging them to find a final solution and achieve lasting peace in the region.
Another important regional topic is the normalization of relations between Armenia and Turkey. Special representatives of the two countries met and discussed the possibility of reopening the railway connection. This could be a new step toward improving relations and economic cooperation between the two nations.
The Artsakh issue remains at the center of international attention. The Human Rights Union of Nagorno-Karabakh has sent letters to the Pope and UNESCO, requesting international intervention for the safe return of Artsakh Armenians and the protection of Armenian cultural heritage. On the other hand, the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) has strongly criticized the Biden-Harris administration, giving their policy an "unsatisfactory" rating for failing to take sufficient steps regarding the Artsakh issue.
In the cultural sphere, the Armenian American Museum of California is presenting the world premiere of the "Hope Rising" project, dedicated to Armenian dance and music. Additionally, the powerful words written by 13-year-old Maral Melkonian in 1996 are mentioned: "I stood up, I am ready to fight for Armenia," which continue to serve as a source of inspiration for a new generation of activists today.
Finally, we report on community losses. Hasmik Kolanjian, who was born in Lebanon and was beloved by her relatives, has passed away at the age of 73. We also announce that on August 4, the 40-day memorial service for Valentin Sarafian will take place at the Holy Martyrs Church. We express our condolences to their families.
