Russian border guards officially complete their work at Zvartnots Airport
On Wednesday, Russia officially completed the withdrawal of its border guard troops from Yerevan's Zvartnots International Airport. This process began months ago when the Armenian authorities approached the Russian side with such a request.
For decades, Russian border guards, together with their Armenian colleagues, carried out passport control and ensured security at the airport. Now, however, Armenia's border guard service will fully assume all those responsibilities.
The end of the process was marked by an official ceremony and the signing of relevant documents. The Armenian government stated that the country already has sufficient experience, knowledge, and technical resources to carry out border control at the airport independently and at a high level.
This change is a significant event in the current stage of relations between Armenia and Russia. Although Russian border guards still continue their service on some other borders of Armenia, their mission at Zvartnots Airport is henceforth considered complete.
