Russian Border Guards Withdraw from Zvartnots Airport
On Wednesday, Russian border guards officially completed their work at Yerevan's Zvartnots International Airport. This process began months ago when Armenian authorities officially requested Russia to withdraw its border troops from the airport.
According to representatives of the Armenian government, the country now possesses all the necessary capabilities and experience to conduct border control independently. Russian border guards had been serving there since 1992, based on an agreement signed between the two states.
During a ceremony held at the airport, the Armenian side thanked their Russian colleagues for their long-term cooperation. From now on, passport control and security at Zvartnots Airport will be carried out exclusively by the border troops of Armenia's National Security Service.
Despite this change, Russian border guards continue their service at other border points in Armenia. Specifically, they guard Armenia's state borders with Turkey and Iran. This event is viewed as a significant step toward strengthening Armenia's independence and state institutions.
