Armenia's Diplomatic Developments, the Artsakh Issue, and Cultural Life
Today's top news concerns Armenia's foreign policy and international relations. The United States has stated that Russia has "turned its back" on Armenia. For this reason, Washington is trying to help Yerevan reduce its dependence on Russia and strengthen ties with the West.
Within the framework of this process, Russia has already completed the withdrawal of its border guards from Yerevan's "Zvartnots" International Airport. Armenia had requested this step earlier this year. Russian border guards had been serving at the airport for decades, but now those duties will be carried out by Armenian specialists.
Regarding regional peace, European Commission President Charles Michel has called on Armenia and Azerbaijan to stop "playing games" and finalize the peace treaty. At the same time, special representatives of Armenia and Turkey met to discuss the normalization of relations. The parties spoke about the reopening of the railway connection and other agreements.
The Artsakh issue also remains in the spotlight. The Artsakh Human Rights Union has sent letters to the Pope and UNESCO, asking for help in the safe return of Artsakh Armenians and the protection of Armenian cultural heritage. On the other hand, the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) has strongly criticized the Biden administration, stating that US policy has contributed to Azerbaijan's actions.
An important event in cultural life is expected in California. The Armenian-American Museum is presenting the world premiere of the "Hope Rising" project, dedicated to Armenian dance and music. Also mentioned are the famous 1996 words of 13-year-old Maral Melkonian: "I stood up, I am ready to fight for Armenia," which continue to inspire young activists.
Finally, we inform you about community losses. Hasmik Kolanjian, who was born in Lebanon and was loved by her relatives, has passed away at the age of 73. Also, the 40-day memorial service for Valentin Sarafian will take place on August 4 at the Holy Martyrs Church.
