Armenia's Foreign Policy Changes and Regional Developments
Today's main news concerns the relations between Armenia and Russia. The United States has stated that Russia has turned its back on Armenia. For this reason, Washington is trying to help Yerevan reduce its dependence on Moscow. At the same time, Russian border guards have officially completed their work at Yerevan's "Zvartnots" International Airport, which the Armenian side had requested at the beginning of the year.
Regarding regional peace, European Council President Charles Michel is calling on Yerevan and Baku to stop "games" and finalize the peace treaty. Additionally, special representatives of Armenia and Turkey met to discuss the normalization of relations between the two countries. They also discussed the possibility of restoring the railway connection, which could be an important step between the neighbors.
The Artsakh issue remains at the center of the international community's attention. The Human Rights Union of Nagorno-Karabakh has sent letters to the Pope and UNESCO. They are requesting international intervention to ensure the safe return of forcibly displaced Armenians and to protect Armenian cultural heritage. On the other hand, the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) has strongly criticized the Biden-Harris administration, stating that their policy has failed regarding the Artsakh issue and did not prevent Azerbaijan's actions.
There are also important events in cultural life. The Armenian-American Museum and Cultural Center of California presents the world premiere of the "Hope Rising" project. This special program is dedicated to Armenian dance and music. Also mentioned are the powerful words of 13-year-old Maral Melkonian from 1996: "I am ready to fight for Armenia." These words have become a source of inspiration for new generations of activists today.
We also learn with sorrow about the losses of community members. On July 20, 2024, Hasmik Kolanjian, who was born in 1951 in Lebanon, passed away. She was a beloved wife, mother, and relative. We also inform you that on August 4, the 40th-day memorial service for Valentin Sarafian will take place at the "Holy Martyrs" Church.
Thus, today's news presents the political challenges facing Armenia, the efforts to achieve peace, and the active participation of the diaspora in national and cultural issues. Political changes and community events show the Armenian people's continuous struggle for their rights and future.
