Russian border guards officially depart from Zvartnots Airport
On Wednesday, Russia completed the withdrawal of its border guards from Yerevan's Zvartnots International Airport. This process took place at the request of the Armenian authorities, which was presented earlier this year. From now on, border control at the airport will be carried out exclusively by Armenian specialists.
For decades, Russian border guards have served at Zvartnots, supporting the Armenian side. However, the Armenian government announced that the country now possesses the necessary experience and technical means to manage the border checkpoint independently.
The withdrawal process was peaceful and proceeded according to the planned schedule. The Russian side has officially confirmed that all its employees have left the airport premises. This is a significant event concerning the management of Armenia's state borders.
Despite this change, Russian border guards still continue their service in other parts of Armenia. They guard the borders with Turkey and Iran, in accordance with existing agreements between the two countries.
This move is seen as part of the changes taking place in Armenia's foreign policy and security sector. The authorities assure that Armenian border guards are ready to ensure the airport's security at a high level.
