Russian border guards depart from Zvartnots Airport
On Wednesday, Russia completed the withdrawal of its border guards from Yerevan's Zvartnots International Airport. This process took place at the request of the Armenian authorities, which was submitted earlier this year.
For decades, Russian border guards worked at the airport alongside their Armenian counterparts. However, the Armenian government decided that the country now has sufficient experience and capabilities to carry out border control independently.
An official ceremony was held at the airport, during which a corresponding protocol was signed. Now, only the Armenian border guard troops will provide service at all checkpoints of Zvartnots Airport.
This move is seen as a sign of changing relations between Armenia and Russia. Despite this, Russian border guards still continue to guard Armenia's borders with Turkey and Iran, in accordance with interstate agreements.
Armenian authorities assure that the level of security at the airport will remain high. No significant changes are expected for passengers in the service process or during passport control.
