Russian border guards officially leave "Zvartnots" airport
On Wednesday, Russia officially completed the withdrawal of its border guards from Yerevan's "Zvartnots" International Airport. This process began several months ago at the request of the Armenian government. From now on, the airport's security and border control will be carried out exclusively by Armenian specialists.
Armenian authorities approached the Russian side earlier this year, requesting the termination of their service at the airport. The Armenian side noted that Armenia's border guard troops already possess sufficient experience and skills to operate without foreign assistance. This is considered an important step toward strengthening the country's sovereignty.
Russian border guards had been serving at "Zvartnots" since 1992. For many years, they worked alongside their Armenian colleagues to check passenger documents and maintain order. However, political relations between Yerevan and Moscow have shifted recently, leading to this decision.
Despite this change, Russian border guards continue to be stationed at some of Armenia's other borders, such as those with Turkey and Iran. The departure from "Zvartnots" is a symbolic event that demonstrates Armenia's desire to independently manage its strategically significant hubs.
