Russian border guards officially depart from Zvartnots airport
Russia has completed the withdrawal of its border guards from Yerevan's Zvartnots International Airport. This process officially concluded on Wednesday. Armenian authorities made this request earlier this year, stating that the Armenian side is now ready to manage border control independently.
For decades, Russian border guards worked at the airport alongside their Armenian counterparts. They were primarily responsible for passport control and security. From now on, all these functions will be carried out exclusively by Armenia's border guard troops.
Representatives of the Armenian government have stated that the country possesses sufficient experience and technical resources to maintain service at the airport. This decision is viewed as a significant step toward strengthening Armenia's state sovereignty.
Despite departing from the airport, Russian border guards continue their service on Armenia's borders with Turkey and Iran. This change at Zvartnots opens a new chapter in Armenian-Russian relations and security cooperation.
