Armenia's Foreign Relations and Significant Diaspora Events
The United States has stated that Russia has "turned its back" on Armenia. For this reason, Washington is attempting to reduce Armenia's dependence on Moscow. At the same time, Russian border guards have officially concluded their work at Yerevan's "Zvartnots" airport, a move requested by the Armenian side earlier this year.
European Council President Charles Michel is calling on Yerevan and Baku to stop "playing games" and finalize the peace treaty. He held separate meetings with the leaders of both countries in an effort to accelerate the process during the final days of his term.
Special representatives from Armenia and Turkey met to discuss the normalization of relations. They spoke about the possibility of restarting the railway link between the two countries and other new agreements that could contribute to the opening of borders.
International pressure regarding the Artsakh issue continues. The Human Rights Union of Nagorno-Karabakh has sent letters to the Pope and UNESCO, requesting assistance for the return of Artsakh Armenians and the protection of Armenian cultural heritage. On the other hand, the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) has strongly criticized the Biden administration for its failed policy on the Artsakh issue.
In the cultural sphere, the Armenian-American Museum of California is presenting the world premiere of the "Hope Rising" project. This special program is dedicated to Armenian dance and music, aiming to inspire the audience and celebrate the strength of Armenian culture.
Inspiring historical episodes are also being mentioned in the Armenian press. In 1996, the words written by 13-year-old Maral Melkonian, "I stood up, I am ready to fight for Armenia," have become a slogan for a new generation of activists who continue to defend Armenian interests.
Finally, we report on community losses. On July 20, beloved mother and sister Hasmik Kolanjian passed away. Additionally, on August 4, a 40-day memorial service for Valentin Sarafian will take place at the Holy Martyrs Church.
