Russian border guards have left Zvartnots Airport
On Wednesday, Russian border guards officially completed their work at Yerevan's Zvartnots International Airport. This process began months ago when Armenian authorities demanded that airport control be carried out exclusively by Armenian specialists.
From now on, passport and border control at the airport will be conducted only by employees of the National Security Service of Armenia. For decades, Russian border guards worked alongside their Armenian colleagues to ensure the security of the airport.
The Armenian government announced this decision earlier this year. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that Armenia already possesses sufficient experience and capabilities to independently control its air borders. This step is viewed as an important stage in strengthening the country's sovereignty.
The withdrawal of Russian border guards from Zvartnots is a significant event in the context of Armenian-Russian relations. Representatives of both sides signed a corresponding document confirming the completion of the transition. This change demonstrates Armenia's aspiration to assume greater responsibility for its own security.
