Armenia’s Foreign Relations and Key Diaspora Events
The United States has stated that Russia has turned its back on Armenia. Washington is now trying to help Yerevan reduce its economic and political dependence on Moscow. This statement comes against the backdrop of significant geopolitical changes taking place in the region.
Within the framework of these changes, Russia has already completed the withdrawal of its border guards from Yerevan’s Zvartnots International Airport. The Armenian government had requested months ago that Armenian specialists independently carry out border control, and this process was officially completed on Wednesday.
Regarding regional peace, European Commission President Charles Michel has called on Armenia and Azerbaijan to stop "playing games" and finalize the peace treaty. In the final days of his term, Michel is attempting to promote the achievement of a stable agreement between the parties and put an end to the long-standing conflict.
At the same time, special representatives from Armenia and Turkey met to discuss the normalization process of their relations. The parties discussed the possibility of restarting the railway connection between the two countries. This could be of great significance for the development of regional trade and transport routes.
The Artsakh issue also remains in the spotlight. The Human Rights Union of Nagorno-Karabakh has appealed to the Pope and UNESCO, asking for the protection of Armenian cultural heritage and support for the return of forcibly displaced persons. On the other hand, the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) has assessed the Biden administration's policy as "insufficient," accusing them of failing to obstruct Azerbaijan's actions.
An important event is expected in the cultural life of California. The Armenian-American Museum is presenting the world premiere of the "Hope Rising" project, dedicated to Armenian dance and music. The famous 1996 words of 13-year-old Maral Melkonian, "I am ready to fight for Armenia," which continue to inspire young activists today, are also mentioned.
Finally, we report on community losses. Hasmik Kolanjian, who was born in Lebanon and was beloved by her relatives, has passed away at the age of 73. We also announce that the 40-day memorial service for Valentin Sarafian will take place on August 4 at the Holy Martyrs Church.
