Developments in Armenia's Foreign Policy and Community News
Today's top news concerns the changing relationship between Armenia and Russia. The United States has stated that Russia has "turned its back" on Armenia, which is why Washington is now trying to help Yerevan reduce its dependence on Moscow. This statement illustrates the new geopolitical situation taking place in the region.
Alongside these developments, Russia has completed the withdrawal of its border guards from Yerevan's "Zvartnots" International Airport. This process took place at the request of the Armenian side, which was presented earlier this year. Now, border control at the airport will be fully carried out by the relevant services of Armenia.
On the international stage, European Commission President Charles Michel has called on Yerevan and Baku to stop "playing games" and finally sign a peace treaty. At the same time, the special representatives of Armenia and Turkey met to discuss the process of normalizing relations, including the possibility of restarting the railway link between the two countries.
The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) has strongly criticized the Biden-Harris administration for its policy on the Artsakh issue, giving them an "unsatisfactory" grade. In parallel, the Human Rights Union of Nagorno-Karabakh has sent letters to the Pope and UNESCO, requesting international support for the return of Artsakh Armenians and the protection of Armenian cultural heritage.
In the cultural sphere, the Armenian American Museum of California has announced the world premiere of the special project "Hope Rising," dedicated to Armenian dance and music. Also mentioned are the powerful words of 13-year-old Maral Melkonian from 1996: "I stood up, I am ready to fight for Armenia," which continue to inspire a new generation of activists to this day.
Finally, we report on community obituaries. Hasmik Kolanjian, born in Lebanon, who was a beloved wife, mother, and relative, has passed away. Also, the 40-day memorial service for Valentin Sarafian will take place on August 4 at the Holy Martyrs Armenian Church.
