Russian Border Guards Officially Withdraw from Zvartnots Airport

On Wednesday, Russia completed the withdrawal of its border guards from Yerevan's Zvartnots International Airport. This process took place at the request of the Armenian authorities, which was submitted earlier this year. This marks a significant change in the airport's security system.

For decades, Russian border guards, together with their Armenian counterparts, controlled Armenia's air border. However, the Armenian government decided that the country now has sufficient experience and technical capabilities to carry out border control at the airport independently.

Starting from August 1, only the border guard troops of Armenia's National Security Service have been serving at all checkpoints of Zvartnots Airport. The departure of the Russian side took place with an official ceremony, during which the parties signed a corresponding protocol and expressed gratitude for their joint work.

This event is considered an important step on the path to strengthening Armenia's sovereignty. Despite leaving Zvartnots, Russian border guards still continue to monitor Armenia's borders with Turkey and Iran, in accordance with the interstate agreements in force between the two countries.
