Armenia's Foreign Policy and Key Community Events
The United States has stated that Russia has turned its back on Armenia, and for that reason, Washington is trying to reduce Yerevan's dependence on Moscow. A significant step in this process was the withdrawal of Russian border guards from Yerevan's "Zvartnots" International Airport this Wednesday, which had been previously requested by the Armenian side.
On the international stage, European Commission President Charles Michel is calling on Yerevan and Baku to finally sign the peace treaty. He noted that the parties must stop "playing games" and bring the process to a conclusion. Michel held separate meetings with the leaders of both countries, encouraging progress during his final days in office.
The process of normalizing relations between Armenia and Turkey also continues. Special representatives from both countries met and discussed the possibility of reopening the railway link. This could create new opportunities for regional trade and economic development.
The Artsakh issue remains at the center of international attention. The Human Rights Union of Nagorno-Karabakh has sent letters to the Pope and UNESCO, requesting assistance for the safe return of Artsakh Armenians and the protection of Armenian cultural heritage. At the same time, the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) has strongly criticized the Biden administration for its policy regarding the Artsakh issue.
In the cultural sphere, the Armenian American Museum of California is presenting the world premiere of the "Hope Rising" project, dedicated to Armenian dance and music. Also mentioned are the powerful 1996 words of 13-year-old Maral Melkonian—"I am ready to fight for Armenia"—which continue to inspire a new generation of activists today.
Unfortunately, there are also losses within the Armenian community. Hasmik Kolanjian, who was born in Lebanon, has passed away at the age of 73. Additionally, the 40-day memorial service for Valentin Sarafian will take place on August 4 at the Holy Martyrs Church in Los Angeles. We express our condolences to their relatives.
