Russian border guards officially leave Zvartnots Airport
On Wednesday, Russia officially completed the withdrawal of its border guards from Yerevan's Zvartnots International Airport. This process took place at the request of the Armenian authorities, which was submitted earlier this year.
Russian border guards had been serving at Zvartnots Airport for more than 30 years, starting from 1992. The Armenian government stated that the country now possesses the necessary capabilities and experience to conduct border control at the airport independently.
The border guard troops of Armenia's National Security Service have now fully assumed responsibility for airport security and passport control. This marks a significant shift in security cooperation between the two countries.
Despite this change, Russian border guards remain stationed at Armenia's other borders, specifically those with Turkey and Iran. However, their departure from Zvartnots is viewed as an important step toward strengthening Armenia's sovereignty.
