Russian border guards officially depart from "Zvartnots" airport
On Wednesday, Russian border guards officially concluded their work at Yerevan's "Zvartnots" International Airport. This process began months ago following an official request from the Armenian government.
Armenian authorities had stated that the country now possesses sufficient experience and technical capabilities to independently carry out border control at the airport. Russian border guards had been serving at "Zvartnots" since 1992, in accordance with an agreement signed between the two countries.
An official ceremony took place at the airport, during which representatives of both sides signed the relevant protocols. From now on, only the border guard troops of Armenia's National Security Service will work at all checkpoints of the airport.
Despite departing from "Zvartnots," Russian border guards still continue their service on Armenia's state borders with Turkey and Iran. This change is viewed as an important step toward strengthening the independence of Armenia's security system.
