Russian Border Guards Officially Withdraw from Zvartnots Airport
Russia officially completed the withdrawal of its border guard troops from Yerevan's Zvartnots International Airport on Wednesday. This process took place at the request of the Armenian authorities, which was submitted earlier this year.
The Armenian government noted that the country now has sufficient experience and technical capabilities to independently carry out border control at the airport. Prior to this, Russian border guards assisted the Armenian side in security and control matters.
Representatives of the Russian Federal Security Service had been serving at Zvartnots since 1992. For more than three decades, they have been present at Armenia's main air gateway, working alongside their Armenian colleagues.
An official ceremony took place at the airport on the occasion of the departure, during which representatives of the two countries signed the corresponding protocol. The Armenian side thanked the Russian border guards for their long-term cooperation and service.
From now on, border control at Zvartnots Airport will be fully carried out by the border guard troops of Armenia's National Security Service. This change is considered an important step towards strengthening Armenia's sovereignty and state institutions.
