Armenia's Foreign Policy and International Developments
Today's most important news concerns the change in relations between Armenia and Russia. The United States has stated that Russia has "turned its back" on Armenia, which is why Washington is trying to help Yerevan reduce its dependence on Moscow. In this context, Russian border guards have officially completed their work at Yerevan's "Zvartnots" International Airport, which the Armenian side had previously requested.
New steps are being taken toward establishing regional peace. European Commission President Charles Michel has called on Armenia and Azerbaijan to stop "games" and finalize the peace treaty. Michel held meetings with the leaders of both countries, aiming to accelerate the process in the final days of his term.
At the same time, special representatives of Armenia and Turkey met to discuss the possibilities of normalizing relations. The parties discussed the issue of reopening railway communication, which could be of great significance for regional communication and economic development.
The Artsakh issue continues to remain at the center of international organizations' attention. The Human Rights Union of Nagorno-Karabakh has sent letters to the Pope and UNESCO, asking for intervention in the protection of Armenian cultural heritage and the safe return of displaced Armenians. On the other hand, the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) has strongly criticized the Biden administration for conducting an insufficient policy regarding the Artsakh issue and for supporting Azerbaijan.
Important events are also taking place in cultural life. The Armenian-American Museum of California presents the world premiere of the "Hope Rising" project, dedicated to Armenian dance and music. The words of 13-year-old Maral Melkonian, written back in 1996, are also mentioned. Her expression "I stood up, I am ready to fight for Armenia" continues to inspire a new generation of activists to this day.
Finally, we inform about community losses. Hasmik Kolanjian, who was born in Lebanon and was a beloved family member, has passed away at the age of 73. It was also announced that the 40-day memorial service for Valentin Sarafyan will take place on August 4 at Holy Martyrs Church.
