Russian border guards have finally left Zvartnots Airport
On Wednesday, Russia officially completed the withdrawal of its border guards from Yerevan's Zvartnots International Airport. This process took place at the request of the Armenian authorities, which was submitted earlier this year.
For decades, Russian border guards worked at the airport, assisting the Armenian side in carrying out border control. However, the Armenian government decided that Armenian specialists now have sufficient experience and skills to perform this work independently.
Starting today, only the border guard troops of Armenia's National Security Service are performing service at all checkpoints of Zvartnots Airport. The Russian side has completely handed over its duties and left the airport premises.
This event marks a significant change in the existing security relations between Armenia and Russia. Despite this change, Russian border guards still continue their service on Armenia's state borders with Turkey and Iran.
The Armenian authorities expressed gratitude to the Russian side for many years of joint work. From now on, Armenia alone will be responsible for the airport's security and border checks.
