Russian border guards officially depart from Zvartnots Airport
On Wednesday, Russia officially completed the withdrawal of its border guards from Yerevan's Zvartnots International Airport. This process took place at the request of the Armenian government, which was submitted earlier this year.
For decades, border guards from Russia's Federal Security Service, alongside their Armenian counterparts, conducted passport control at the airport. Now, this work will be carried out solely by Armenia's border guard troops.
Armenian authorities have stated that the country now possesses sufficient experience, skills, and technical capabilities to independently perform border control at the airport. This is an important step toward strengthening Armenia's sovereignty.
Despite this change, Russian border guards continue their service on Armenia's borders with Turkey and Iran. The protection of those borders is governed by other interstate agreements that remain in effect.
The process concluded peacefully and according to the planned schedule. Representatives from both countries signed the relevant documents confirming the completion of operations at Zvartnots Airport.
