SPÖ Youth calls for strike against headscarf ban

Austria’s new headscarf ban for girls under 14 has triggered a political backlash, with the Sozialistische Jugend (SJ), the youth wing of the SPÖ, calling for a school strike in protest against the measure.

The ban applies to girls under 14 at both public and private schools and officially takes effect with the new school year. The government says the measure is intended to protect children and strengthen the freedom and self-determination of young girls.

Parents who repeatedly violate the ban could face administrative fines ranging from €150 to €800. Authorities had previously planned an information and awareness period before penalties could be imposed.

The Sozialistische Jugend has now joined opponents of the legislation. The group shared a call from the initiative “Schule brennt” (School Is Burning) for a “school strike against the headscarf ban” on October 9 at Vienna’s Platz der Menschenrechte (Square of Human Rights).

The protest campaign accuses the policy of promoting “racism and sexism” and has also criticized what it describes as the militarization of schools. The move has intensified an already heated debate over religious freedom, discrimination, child protection and the rights of young girls.

This is the second attempt to introduce a headscarf ban in Austrian schools. A previous law introduced under a Schwarz-Blau (Black-Blue) government was struck down by Austria’s Verfassungsgerichtshof (Constitutional Court). The current government believes the new legislation has been designed in a way that will withstand constitutional scrutiny.

The controversy has also created tensions within the SPÖ. Some senior party figures have criticized the youth organization for opposing the ban, arguing that the debate should focus on protecting girls, their development and their ability to make independent choices. Meanwhile, opponents of the SJ protest accuse it of siding with political Islam and failing to consider the government’s stated child-protection objectives.
