Vienna S-Bahn trunk line stays shut until autumn 2027 after cable fire
There will be no S-Bahn trains between Wien Praterstern and Wien Hauptbahnhof until the end of October 2027. ÖBB confirmed the timetable after a cable fire on the Stammstrecke in mid-August destroyed signalling and power infrastructure along the tunnel section.
The closed stretch is the spine of Vienna's suburban network, carrying roughly 250,000 passengers a day. Lines S1, S2, S3 and S4 are affected, and the replacement arrangements will be in place for more than a year — this is not a summer works closure that ends in September.
Replacement buses run between the closed stations, but they are slower and cannot absorb peak demand. ÖBB and Wiener Linien advise using the U1 between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof where possible, or the U3 and tram lines D and 18 for cross-city journeys, rather than waiting for the bus bridge. Journey times through the affected corridor should be planned with 20 to 30 minutes of extra allowance at peak hours.
Existing S-Bahn tickets and Klimaticket are valid on the replacement services and on the Wiener Linien alternatives for the affected sections. Commuters with annual tickets do not need to buy anything additional.
The reconstruction covers signalling, overhead line and cable runs through a tunnel section that cannot be worked on while trains are running, which is why the closure is measured in years rather than weeks. ÖBB has said interim partial reopenings are possible but has not committed to dates.
