Thunderstorm warning: Where thunderstorms will occur and what Austria can expect

After days of rain and cooler temperatures, Austria is heading into another spell of severe weather. Meteorologists are warning of powerful thunderstorms from Thursday, with some regions facing a risk of dangerous conditions.

Wednesday is expected to provide only a brief break before the weather turns unsettled again. On Thursday, temperatures could climb as high as 33°C, bringing a short return of summer heat before thunderstorms move across large parts of the country.

According to GeoSphere Austria, thunderstorms will spread from the southwest during Thursday afternoon and evening. A larger storm complex could develop north of the Alps, potentially bringing intense rainfall and strong wind gusts.

The main threat is heavy rainfall, although powerful storm gusts are also possible. Meteorologists warn that there is a regional risk of severe weather. Conditions are expected to gradually improve after midnight.

The unsettled weather will continue into Friday, when rain and thunderstorms could occur from the beginning of the day in some areas. Locally, particularly heavy rainfall is possible.

On Saturday, thunderstorms and showers are expected mainly in western and southern Austria from around midday. Sunday will remain changeable across the western half of the country, with rain showers and occasional thunderstorms, although some sunny periods are also possible.

The outlook is more favorable from Lower Austria toward Lower Carinthia, where much of Sunday is expected to remain relatively sunny. Overall, however, Austria is facing several days of unsettled weather, with thunderstorms and locally severe conditions remaining a possibility.
