Sports Summer in Austria: Football World Cup Exit and Start of the Cycling Tour
There are currently many important sporting events in Austria that are capturing the interest of fans. While the national football team has unfortunately been eliminated from the 2026 World Cup, the country is preparing for the start of the tradition-steeped Tour of Austria. There is also exciting news for sports enthusiasts across the country in club football and basketball.
The Austrian national team was defeated in the round of 32 at the football World Cup. The team lost 0-3 against a strong Spain. Following the elimination, there have been discussions in the media regarding the team's performance. In Germany, the resignation of head coach Julian Nagelsmann also made headlines, which met with great interest in this country as well due to the close connection to Austrian football.
At the same time, cycling is celebrating a significant anniversary. The "Tour of Austria" is turning 75. This year, the race starts in Graz, which is a real "home game" especially for the local team WSA KTM Graz. The tour has a long history that began shortly after the Second World War under the name "Quer durch Österreich" and has developed into a modern professional race today.
There is also a lot going on in football outside of the major World Cup. The U19 women's team also faced Spain at the European Championship in Zenica. In the domestic Bundesliga, the club Austria Wien is currently preparing for the new season in Burgenland, which begins at the start of August. Fan interest is high: tickets for the Austria sector for the match against Wiener Sport-Club are already completely sold out.
There are even more highlights for sports fans to look forward to in the future. In basketball, the men's team is fighting in the qualifiers for the 2027 World Cup, with the recent match against Poland in Vienna being the main focus. Additionally, there is good news for fans of US sports: from the 2026/27 season, the American NFL will be broadcast live on the channel Sky. Austria therefore remains a country full of sporting variety even after the end of the football World Cup.
