Karner reports 6,512 asylum claims, lowest since 1997

Austria recorded 6,512 asylum applications between January and the end of August 2026, the Interior Ministry said. Over the same eight months last year the figure was 11,898. That is roughly 5,400 fewer applications and a fall of more than 45 percent. Projected forward, the year would close just under 10,000 applications. The last time Austria finished a year below that mark was 1997.

The detail behind the total matters more than the headline number for anyone already living here. Around 3,300 of this year's applications came from minors, and the ministry says most of those are children born in Austria to parents already in the system rather than people who have just arrived. Only 2,483 applications this year are what the ministry calls original claims, meaning people newly entering the country. Family reunification remains suspended in practice, and just 60 people reached Austria under it.

Interior Minister Gerhard Karner credits the drop to measures against irregular migration and to the country's border control model, which has been widened from checks at the line itself to checks in the border area and further inland. The ministry argues that smuggling routes have shifted to the Balkan coastal route and away from Austria. Karner said the falling numbers are no reason to celebrate and described them instead as a mandate to go further.

What this changes in practice is the direction of travel rather than any rule you have to act on. Austria is working with Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands and Greece on plans for asylum procedures and return centres outside Europe, and the ministry confirmed those talks in August. Family reunification staying suspended is the part with the most immediate weight for people waiting to bring a spouse or children.

If you have an application or a reunification request in progress, nothing in these figures changes your own deadlines. Keep checking the status of your file and respond to any request for documents within the period stated in the letter you receive, because processing times move when overall volumes fall.
