Family allowance fraud: Finance Ministry urgently warns against these emails
Austria’s Finanzministerium (Ministry of Finance) is warning citizens about a new phishing scam involving fake emails about Familienbeihilfe (family allowance). Criminals are posing as the Austrian financial administration to steal personal and online banking information.
The fraudulent emails claim that there have been problems with Familienbeihilfe payments because of an alleged misuse of personal data. Recipients are then asked to check their personal information and bank account details.
The messages contain a link labeled “Jetzt Daten überprüfen und sichern” (“Check and secure your data now”). However, the link does not lead to the real Finanzverwaltung (financial administration). Instead, victims are redirected to a fake website designed to collect sensitive information and online banking login details.
The scam is designed to create panic by suggesting that Familienbeihilfe payments could be affected. Security experts warn that people should not click the link, enter their personal information or provide banking credentials through such messages.
The Finanzministerium has emphasized that it does not ask citizens to provide passwords, credit card information or bank account details through suspicious emails. Official financial communications are generally delivered through established channels, including FinanzOnline and official correspondence.
Anyone who receives one of these fraudulent messages should not follow its instructions or open the included links or attachments. The safest response is to delete the email and avoid providing any information. People who have already entered banking details should contact their bank immediately and take steps to secure their account.
