"Never heard of it before" – Incredible bang rocks Vienna

An enormous bang shook Vienna shortly before midnight on Wednesday, startling residents across the city and leaving many convinced they had heard a massive explosion. The deafening noise was reported from several districts.

The blast was heard from Favoriten and the city center all the way to Donaustadt. Residents described the sound as far louder and longer than ordinary thunder, with some saying they initially feared an explosion or major emergency.

Hundreds of people took to social media to describe the frightening moment. Some reported walls shaking, while others said the noise was so powerful that it woke them instantly. One resident compared it to the sound of a building collapsing.

The explanation, however, was not an explosion. A small thunderstorm cell was moving through the neighboring Industrieviertel region, and a lightning strike occurred near Kurpark Oberlaa. The strike was exceptionally powerful, producing the extraordinary bang heard across Vienna.

According to Kachelmannwetter’s lightning tracking, it was a ground strike classified as a “wilder Hausrüttler” — literally a “wild house shaker.” The lightning reached an estimated 159 kiloamperes, dramatically higher than the roughly 10 to 30 kA typically recorded for an ordinary lightning strike.

The powerful strike also caused some disruption. There were isolated power outages, a barrier system in Favoriten stopped working and traffic was affected. Several residents said the sudden blast was so intense that it literally pulled them out of bed.

For many people in Vienna, the experience was unlike anything they had heard before. What initially sounded like a huge explosion turned out to be an extraordinarily powerful lightning strike — but its thunder was strong enough to leave an entire city wondering what had happened.
