Pornography sites in Austria: ID-Austria as a possible youth protection measure
The Austrian federal government is currently discussing stricter measures to protect minors on the internet. At the center of the debate is the question of whether access to pornographic websites should in the future only be possible with age verification via "ID-Austria." The goal of this measure is to effectively protect children and young people from content that is not suitable for minors.
Currently, youth protection in the digital space is a major challenge. While many websites offer age checks, these can easily be bypassed. ID-Austria, the state's digital identity system, offers a technically more secure solution here. Since users must officially verify their identity and age during registration, a link could reliably block access for minors.
Critics of the planned regulation, however, have expressed concerns regarding data protection. They warn that users could lose their anonymity if they have to log in to certain websites with their government-issued data. Furthermore, it is being debated whether such a block can even be enforced comprehensively on international providers.
Politicians emphasize that the protection of children is the top priority. Whether and how such a law will be implemented remains to be seen. The government is currently examining various legal and technical options to find a balance between necessary youth protection and the citizens' right to privacy.
