Rent increased? This help is now available free of charge in Vienna.
Rent increases are leaving many tenants in Vienna wondering whether their new payments are actually legal. The city’s MieterHilfe (Tenant Assistance) is now offering free contract checks and advice on rent increases and tenancy rules.
Since April 1, many rental agreements have been eligible for another rent increase this year. At the same time, stricter rules introduced by the federal government have made it more difficult for tenants to determine whether a Wertanpassung (rent adjustment) or Mietzinserhöhung (rent increase) has been calculated correctly.
Tenants who receive a new rent payment notice can contact the MieterHilfe der Stadt Wien (Vienna Tenant Assistance) for a free review. Experts examine the documents and advise renters on whether the increase complies with Austrian tenancy law.
The service has become particularly important because rental rules have changed in recent years. Vienna's housing councillor Elke Hanel-Torsch said many tenants struggle to understand whether rent adjustments and increases are legally justified. The city says its priority is ensuring that rental regulations are followed.
There is also a major change involving befristete Mietverträge (fixed-term rental contracts). Since 2026, new fixed-term rental agreements generally have to run for at least five years or be extended to meet that minimum period.
If a shorter period is agreed, the rental contract itself remains valid, but the shortened fixed term cannot legally be enforced. This makes it especially important for tenants to have contracts checked before signing them.
According to Christian Bartok, head of the MieterHilfe, the details of each rental contract matter, particularly when calculating rent adjustments. The service provides free, confidential advice on Mietrecht (tenancy law), rent increases, adjustments and fixed-term agreements.
Vienna residents can also meet MieterHilfe experts in person at the Tag des Wiener Wohnbaus (Vienna Housing Day) on September 6, 2026, at Rudolf-Bednar-Park in Leopoldstadt. The experts will be available from noon until 6:30 p.m. to answer tenants’ questions.
