VW recalls 95,000 cars in Austria over steering failure risk
Volkswagen and Audi are recalling more than two million cars worldwide because a screw in the steering could break, according to data from the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). In Austria, about 95,000 vehicles are affected. If the screw breaks, the steering can fail.
The recall covers the VW Golf, Golf Variant, Tiguan, Touran and Caddy built between 24 September 2013 and 1 July 2024, and the Audi Q3 built between 31 October 2017 and 23 May 2024. Worldwide, almost 2.16 million Volkswagens and nearly 700,000 Audi Q3 could be affected. The screw that fastens the steering gear will be replaced with a more corrosion-resistant one.
The repair is free for owners. According to a Volkswagen spokesperson, affected cars may still be driven, but owners should keep the workshop appointment. Owners are usually contacted by letter.
What to do: if you drive one of these models, check whether your car is affected using its vehicle identification number (VIN), which is printed in your registration document. Volkswagen runs the recall under code 48VS and Audi under code 48LG. Contact an authorised VW or Audi workshop and book the free repair. If you receive a recall letter, do not ignore it, because safety recalls must be carried out.
