Major traffic jams for the start of the holidays & more today
Motorists in Austria should expect significant delays on the roads this coming weekend. The reason for this is the start of the summer holidays in several federal states and parts of Germany. It will be particularly crowded on the transit routes heading south.
Allow significantly more time for journeys on the main routes. According to the mobility club ÖAMTC (Austrian Automobile, Motorcycle and Touring Club), the holiday season begins on Friday in western and southern Austria. Since schools are also closing in four German federal states at the same time, a massive volume of traffic is expected on the motorways. Traffic jams and "Blockabfertigung" (metering) – the intermittent release of vehicles in batches before tunnels or bottlenecks – are to be expected, especially at border crossings and in construction areas.
