Wiener Linien: E-scooters banned on buses and trams starting Monday

Starting Monday, September 1, new conditions of carriage for e-scooters will apply at Wiener Linien. Bringing them on buses and trams will no longer be permitted at all—even when folded. On the subway, e-scooters may only be taken outside of peak hours. Wiener Linien announced the change on Sunday.

The permitted times on the subway are Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and again from 6:30 p.m. until the end of service. On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, they may be taken at any time. During peak hours in the morning and late afternoon, they are prohibited. The same rule will apply to e-bikes in the future: folding e-bikes will also no longer be allowed on buses and trams starting Monday.

Those traveling without a motor are not affected. Scooters without an electric drive continue to count as hand luggage and may be taken on all vehicles at any time if folded. The background to the change: e-scooters have been legally classified as vehicles in Austria since May 1, 2026, and they require as much space on public transport as a bicycle.

Anyone who does not comply with the new conditions will pay a 50 euro fine. In addition, a maximum of two bicycles or e-scooters are allowed per boarding area. Passengers in wheelchairs and passengers with strollers have priority. If the spaces are occupied, the next train must be waited for—there is no entitlement to transport.

Anyone who has previously combined an e-scooter with a bus or tram to get to work, a German language course, or school should replan their route today: starting Monday morning, this combination will no longer be possible. For the subway, it is worth scheduling trips before 9:00 a.m. or after 6:30 p.m. Those who are unsure can find the full conditions of carriage on the Wiener Linien website.
