Sports associations demand share of sports betting revenue
The two major organizations "Sport Austria" and "Sportunion" have approached policymakers with a new demand. They are calling for sports in Austria to benefit more financially from the planned gambling reform. Specifically, this concerns the revenue the state generates from the growing sports betting market.
Representatives of the sports associations argue that professional and grassroots sports are closely linked to the world of sports betting. Since sports betting providers generate their profits through sporting events, the associations see a moral and economic obligation. In their view, a portion of these funds should flow directly into the support of sports clubs and projects.
The current debate is taking place against the backdrop of a comprehensive reform of the Gambling Act. The sports organizations emphasize that financial participation would help clubs continue their important social work. This includes, among other things, youth development, the operation of sports facilities, and the support of volunteer coaches.
So far, there has been no final decision from the government regarding this proposal. However, the sports associations hope that their demands will be taken into account in the upcoming negotiations. For many clubs in Austria, such additional funding could be an important pillar for the future.
