VW recalls 850 electric cars in Austria over fire risk
Volkswagen is recalling around 850 electric cars in Austria because faulty battery cells can overheat and, in extreme cases, catch fire. The carmaker confirmed the problem on Thursday 15 October 2026. According to VW, about 650 cars from its ID. range and about 200 Cupra Born are affected in Austria.
The models named are the VW ID.3, ID.4, ID.7 and ID. Buzz from certain production periods between 2023 and 2025, as well as the Cupra Born. Internal quality checks found that individual high-voltage battery cells from outside suppliers do not meet quality requirements because of production faults. In rare cases this can put extra heat stress on the battery. Volkswagen has already started recalls in the United States and the United Kingdom together with the authorities there.
As an immediate safety step, VW is limiting charging on the affected cars to its Battery Care mode, with a maximum of 80 percent. "All vehicle owners will be informed in writing," the company said, adding that for now only 50 cars in Austria need to go to a workshop.
What owners should do: watch for a letter from Volkswagen or Cupra, which explains the charging limit and the next steps. If you drive an ID. model or a Cupra Born and do not want to wait, contact your dealer or the brand's customer service with your vehicle identification number (VIN) to check whether your car is included. Owners who are asked to come in will have their battery inspected.
Until you know whether your car is affected, the safest step is to keep the maximum charge at 80 percent. Most of these cars let you set this limit yourself in the charging menu or in the brand's app. Skoda models are not affected, according to the company.
