After Legionella outbreak in Linz: Calls for stricter controls
A severe Legionella outbreak in Linz has caused great concern over the past few days. Three people have died in the incident. Authorities are currently investigating the exact causes in order to prevent further infections and make the affected areas safe.
At the center of the investigation are so-called cooling towers. These systems are often used in large buildings or industrial facilities for cooling purposes. Experts are now warning that these towers can become a health hazard if maintenance is lacking, as they can spread bacteria such as Legionella.
TÜV Austria is now responding to the current situation and calling for the introduction of a central register for all cooling towers in the country. Such a directory would enable authorities to better monitor the facilities and control regular maintenance more efficiently. To date, there is no comprehensive overview of all locations of these facilities.
The discussion regarding the safety of cooling towers has thus been reignited. As investigations in Linz continue, experts are examining what technical measures are necessary to better protect the public from such bacterial sources in the future. Safety in public and private buildings is the top priority.
