Austria becomes a member of the UN Security Council
Austria has achieved an important diplomatic success. The country has been officially elected to the United Nations (UN) Security Council. Starting next year, Austria will sit on this body as one of ten non-permanent members.
The UN Security Council is considered the world's most important body for issues of international security and peace. For Austria, this is the fourth time in its history that it has held a seat on this significant council. The preparations and the campaign for this election lasted a total of 15 years.
The election is seen as a strong international sign of confidence in Austrian diplomacy. As a member of the Security Council, Austria will be actively involved in decisions regarding global conflicts and security policy challenges over the next two years.
The international community now expects Austria to use its role to promote diplomatic solutions. The government in Vienna emphasized that it will continue to advocate for dialogue and the peaceful resolution of disputes. Work in the Security Council officially begins at the turn of the year.
