Summer break in politics: Working group instead of heat summit
The current summer season is also leading to a quieter phase in Austrian politics. Many politicians are currently on vacation, which is why important political decisions are often postponed to a later date. This also affects the discussion on how to deal with extreme weather events in Austria.
In recent weeks, there have been numerous calls for a so-called "heat summit." The goal of this meeting was to bring together representatives from agriculture, science, and politics to develop strategies against the increasing heat waves. Agriculture is suffering particularly from the high temperatures and the persistent drought.
Instead of a quick summit meeting, however, the government has now decided to set up a working group. Critics see this step as a tried-and-tested political tool to defer difficult topics when no immediate solution is at hand. The working group is expected to address the effects of climate change on the domestic economy in the coming months.
Whether this new working group will deliver concrete results remains to be seen. Many experts emphasize that time is of the essence, as the effects of the heat waves are becoming increasingly noticeable for the Austrian population and farmers. It is expected that the discussions will gain intensity again in the autumn after the summer break.
