Austrian Integration Fund: High demand for German language support among Syrian students
A current report from the Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF) highlights a significant challenge for the Austrian education system. According to the new factsheet, 35 percent of Syrian students in Austria currently require special German language support.
These figures illustrate the importance of targeted language programs for children with a migration background. Language proficiency is considered the most important key to successful integration into school and, later, the labor market. The need for additional support in schools is particularly high in urban areas, such as Vienna.
The ÖIF emphasizes that this support is intended not only to improve language competence but also to increase equal opportunities in the classroom. When students are better able to follow lessons, their chances of successfully completing their schooling increase significantly.
The findings of the report are now being analyzed by education experts. The goal is to further optimize existing support measures in order to offer all children in Austria the same educational opportunities. The debate over the best way to teach language therefore remains a central topic in Austrian education policy.
