“We've had enough!” – Angry protest in front of the Chancellery

Around 500 people gathered outside Austria’s Federal Chancellery in Vienna on Monday, chanting “Uns reicht es!” (“We’ve had enough!”) in protest against Chancellor Christian Stocker’s controversial comments about childcare.

The demonstration was triggered by remarks in which Stocker said that childcare was not work for him. Many protesters interpreted the statement as a devaluation of mothers, grandparents and others who provide unpaid care for children.

The protest took place while Stocker was in Ankara meeting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The Austrian chancellor’s visit focused on issues including migration, international crises and bilateral relations, meaning the domestic backlash was unfolding while he was abroad.

The demonstrators included women as well as men, with protesters gathering at the Ballhausplatz, the square in front of the Austrian Chancellery. Their message was directed clearly at the government, with participants expressing anger over what they viewed as a dismissive attitude toward unpaid childcare and family responsibilities.

The controversy has continued to generate criticism in Austria, particularly among people who argue that childcare involves substantial physical, emotional and organizational work even when it is not formally paid. The protest has therefore turned Stocker’s original remark into a broader debate about how unpaid care work is valued.

The demonstration adds to the political pressure surrounding the Federal Chancellery and Stocker’s government. For the protesters, the issue goes beyond one statement: they say unpaid childcare and the people performing it deserve greater recognition and respect.
