381,200 jobless or in AMS training in September

Unemployment in Austria rose again in September. A total of 381,200 people were registered as unemployed or taking part in AMS training, 6,000 more than a year earlier, an increase of 1.6 percent. In August the figure was 375,730.

The rise comes entirely from women. Unemployment among women grew by 6 percent compared with September 2025, while among men it fell by 0.6 percent. Youth unemployment fell by 1.5 percent, but the number of young people looking for an apprenticeship rose by 8 percent, leaving a gap of 3,977 apprenticeship places. Long-term unemployment rose by 11 percent to 104,101 people, which is 34 percent of everyone registered as unemployed. The sharpest increases were among university graduates, up 10.1 percent, and people with disabilities, up 17 percent. Health and social care was the sector with the biggest rise, at 10.7 percent.

Every province except Vienna recorded more unemployment. Vienna saw a fall of 1.1 percent, while Lower Austria had the largest increase at 7.7 percent. At the same time, the number of jobs rose by 8,000 compared with last year, but the number of vacancies reported to the AMS fell slightly to 78,267.

Job searches are taking longer. More than 30 percent of people registered in September had been looking for work for over a year. What you can do: if you lose your job, register with the AMS straight away and ask about training courses and support. If you are looking for an apprenticeship, apply widely, because the number of places has not kept up with demand.
