Prohibited products that will not be sold without consultation at REWE and ALDI
Germany has introduced a new law starting in 2025 that directly affects all customers of major supermarkets like Rewe and Aldi. The law prohibits the sale of certain organic products without mandatory consultation by trained staff.
The concerned products include three main categories: rodenticides, insecticides, and anti-biofouling products for ships and watercraft. These products will no longer be available on the shelves for direct purchase. Instead, customers must approach store staff for specialized advice on usage, dosages, and safe disposal.
Products containing natural substances such as lavender oil, vinegar, or insect attractants remain available without restrictions. Tick control products also remain available without the need for consultation. Online shopping is also affected: when purchasing these products from websites like Rewe, customers will need to enter their phone number to receive a consultation call from the seller before the order is sent. The purpose of this call is to ensure safe use and provide environmental alternatives when necessary.
Rewe has started implementing changes within its stores, where special consultation points have been created and prohibited products are kept in locked cabinets that can only be opened by employees. The company aims to raise consumer awareness and encourage them to use less harmful natural alternatives for health and the environment, such as using cinnamon to repel ants.
Although these measures mean additional steps while shopping, they aim to protect children, pets, and the environment from the risks associated with chemicals, and encourage a shift towards safer and more sustainable products.
