The European Union launches the digital euro in 2027

The European Central Bank (ECB) and the European Commission announced the launch of a new digital currency known as the "digital euro", which is a digital version of money that can be used throughout the European Union. This development comes as a step to keep up with the increasing spread of digital currencies like "Bitcoin", which has gained wide acceptance in the business sector.

The digital euro is not intended to immediately replace cash or coins, but will serve as a parallel form. The primary goal of introducing this currency is to enhance the stability of the payment system in the European Union and to provide a reliable digital alternative to commercial digital currencies, thereby helping to maintain the financial sovereignty of the European Union.

Users will be able to convert their bank balances into digital euros, with a maximum limit of 3000 euros to avoid destabilizing the banking system. This currency will also be available for use via smartphones and tablets, even for those who do not have bank accounts.

Despite the European Central Bank's assurance of protecting user privacy, transactions exceeding 100 euros will be traceable by major banks or the European Central Bank, with additional monitoring by tax authorities, whether the funds are digital or cash.

Currently, the project is still in its preparatory phase, which will end in October 2025. After that, the European Commission, the European Parliament, and the European Council will discuss the legislation related to the launch of the currency, with a final decision to be made by 2026.

The actual launch of the digital euro through commercial banks will take between 12 to 18 months, meaning that the new digital currency will be available for public use in the European Union by 2027.
