Sepsis: why every minute counts for your health

Sepsis, often colloquially referred to as blood poisoning, remains a serious public health threat in Belgium. It is a life-threatening reaction of the body to an infection. When the immune system overreacts, it can lead to organ damage, tissue loss, and, in the worst case, death. According to the FPS Public Health, rapid action is crucial: with sepsis, every hour literally counts.

Symptoms of sepsis can be unclear at first, which makes it difficult to recognize. Important warning signs include a very high or, conversely, extremely low body temperature, confusion, shortness of breath, and a rapid heart rate. Patients may also experience chills or clammy, mottled skin. Because these symptoms resemble those of a common flu, the severity of the situation is often underestimated.

Anyone can get sepsis, but certain groups are at greater risk. This applies especially to young children, the elderly, people with a weakened immune system, or individuals who have recently undergone surgery. It is essential that people do not wait if in doubt, but contact a doctor immediately. Early diagnosis and rapid treatment with antibiotics and supportive care can significantly increase the chances of survival.

Belgian health authorities therefore emphasize the importance of education. By recognizing symptoms in a timely manner, the time between the first complaints and the start of medical treatment can be shortened. Increasing awareness of this condition is a priority to reduce the number of victims in our country. If sepsis is suspected, the message is always: call the emergency number immediately or consult an emergency department.
