Belgium: a new proposal to tax the wealthiest
In Belgium, the political party "Les Engagés" has made a significant proposal to balance the country's budget. The party wishes to introduce a new tax that would target only the wealthiest citizens. This measure aims to find new sources of revenue for the state while ensuring a degree of social justice.
Specifically, this proposal concerns individuals who possess significant financial assets. The tax would apply to bank accounts with a balance exceeding 500,000 euros. The proposed rate is 0.3% on these amounts. According to the party, this would affect approximately 5% of the Belgian population, representing the country's most affluent households.
To justify this idea, Les Engagés explain that everyone must participate in the national effort to reduce Belgium's debt. They point out that efforts have already been requested from other categories of the population, such as job seekers. For the party, it is therefore logical and fair to also request a financial contribution from those with the highest incomes.
This proposal comes in a context of difficult budget negotiations. The government is looking for solutions to fund public services without increasing taxes on the middle class. The idea of taxing capital rather than labor is a frequent topic of discussion among Belgian political leaders.
However, this measure still needs to be discussed and accepted by other political partners before becoming law. If adopted, it could mark a significant shift in Belgium's fiscal policy. For now, the debate remains open regarding the actual effectiveness and economic consequences of such a wealth tax.
