Belgium activates its alert plan in response to heatwave and ozone pollution
The Risk Management Group (RMG) officially activated the alert phase of the Ozone and Heatwave Plan in Belgium on June 23, 2026. This preventive measure was taken due to weather forecasts predicting high temperatures and a significant increase in ozone concentrations in the air over the coming days.
Intense heat, combined with strong sunlight, promotes the formation of ground-level ozone. This gas can be irritating to the respiratory tract and may cause headaches, coughing, or respiratory discomfort, particularly in the most vulnerable individuals, such as children, the elderly, and those suffering from chronic illnesses.
Health authorities recommend that the public remain vigilant. It is advised to limit strenuous physical activity outdoors, especially during the hottest hours of the day, and to seek out cool places. It is also essential to drink water regularly and wear lightweight clothing.
In addition, authorities are calling on citizens to adopt responsible behaviors to limit pollution, particularly by reducing the use of private cars. The plan will remain active as long as weather conditions pose a risk to public health. Citizens are invited to regularly follow updates from Belgian health authorities.
