Belgium activates its alert plan in response to heatwave and ozone pollution
The Risk Management Group (RMG) officially activated the alert phase of the Ozone and Heatwave Plan in Belgium on June 23, 2026. This preventive measure has been triggered to protect the health of citizens in the face of a significant rise in temperatures and a deterioration in air quality across the entire territory.
The combination of high heat and intense sunlight promotes the formation of ozone in the lower layers of the atmosphere. When present in excessive quantities, this gas can cause irritation of the respiratory tract and eyes, particularly in the most vulnerable individuals such as children, the elderly, or those suffering from respiratory diseases.
Authorities recommend that the public remain vigilant during this period. It is advised to drink water regularly, prioritize light physical activities during the cooler hours of the day, and avoid intense outdoor exertion, especially in the late afternoon when ozone concentrations are at their peak.
The plan also provides for constant monitoring of the situation by public health and environmental experts. Measures could be adapted based on the evolution of weather conditions in the coming days. Citizens are advised to regularly consult official websites for updates on air quality and health recommendations.
